Shell Energy might not be the first name that comes to mind when you think about broadband deals. However, this has been an ever-evolving market, and competition has increased and become quite fierce. Many players have joined the market, and there is now a massive choice for customers which is, of course, great news. 

The downside is that it can make choosing broadband a little bit more daunting because you want to be sure you get the right deal, which is where we come in, with a range of reviews of all the broadband providers and some of the packages they offer to help you make the best-informed choice. Choosing the best deal for you comes down to a few factors, including how many people are in your household and what you use the Internet for. You would expect to pay more for an Internet package where several users have many devices and like to stream movies, music and potentially play games. A smaller package would be for users who primarily soft the web, check emails, and maybe use their social media.

Being such a competitive market means that providers will be offering all sorts of incentives to try and get you to sign with them. In many cases, they have other services that are actually valuable to your life, and if you combine several from the same provider, you will save more money in the long run. A little bit of care is needed when it comes to introductory prices because this can sometimes be very temporary. It is not widely advertised, but it’s hidden in the small print that the initial rate will last maybe 3 to 6 months and after that, a higher price will be paid. It is also worth looking into the termination policy if you plan to move house within the period of your contract. 

Many broadband providers can only view this as ending a contract early rather than moving home due to the differences in services on offer in various geographical locations. So you would be charged a termination fee, and then have to start a new package at your new property. With that in mind, there are some broadband providers who offer a rolling month on month contract with no commitment, and that might be the best bet if you are unsure how long you are staying in your current home. There are some packages that last between 12 and 18 months, and these are perfect if you have no intention of moving and you might make an even more significant saving.

Broadband is a relatively new invention, and initially, we all seemed happy with access to the Internet, and slower speed is associated with ADSL. But of course, technology always moves on, and now we have high-speed streaming services in high definition, and naturally, people want to be able to access them. This meant that technology had to keep up, and the solution was found in fibre-optic broadband. It is named after the cables that carry the information, and these are made of plastic or glass and have enabled much larger packets of data to be sent at any one time. 

This has dramatically improved the speed and meant that more people have access to much faster Internet services. Previously we relied on the copper wires used in the telephone system and mobile service broadband. In order to access fibre-optic, we have had to have the whole country rewired. This means that most people now have access to some form of fibre-optic, and it is indeed faster than ADSL every time. Before you sign up to any deal, you should run your checks on the speed the company can offer you. Each website has a coverage check out map, and you simply enter your postcode or landline number to find out precisely what is on offer. Do not be guided by the maximum speed they show on the packages, as it might not be available in your area. Secondly, you can run a test on your current network speed to see what you are actually getting. If this is fast enough, you can just look to save money if it is too slow you can look to upgrade.

It is generally accepted that in a household where you only have one or two people, who don’t use the Internet for much more than sending and receiving email, searching websites, and perhaps social media that a speed of 0 Mbps to 30Mbps is acceptable. This means you are a good candidate for ADSL and will get some really great prices as this is a cheaper form of broadband.

For families of three or more people where you will all want to be online at the same time, especially if there is streaming involved, you need something a little bit more robust. Aim for something in the region of 30Mbps to 60Mbps, and you will have no problem having all three of you or more online at the same time with multiple devices.

If there are even more of you, and you all have multiple devices including mobile phones, tablets, desktops, laptops, voice assistance and more you are going to look at something in the region of 60 to 100. This will ensure that you have a constant supply and there is no buffering or dropping out, which will annoy the users in a moment. This option is perfect for house shares and student accommodation.

Finally, speeds over 100Mbps are probably only really needed if you have a home business and download large files or stream lots. There are some households that prefer to keep their services up high, and of course, if the speeds are available in your area, there is nothing wrong with doing this. These packages will be slightly more expensive though so at least be something you take into consideration as there is no point paying for service you do not use.
