You buy the device outright and you can put any network SIM card in it you like. The good thing about this method is that if you see a better deal in the future and can get more value with another network, all you have to do is swap SIMs. 

The negative aspect of this deal is that you will more than likely be paying more for your minutes, calls, and data as you will miss out on the perks that come with a contract. You also have to fork out the cash up front and will probably not receive free minutes and texts with this type of deal.
