The other benefit of this option is that you can put any network SIM card in the phone as it will be unlocked. 

The downside is that you will need to fork out a fair chunk of change to pay for the phone upfront and Pay As You Go deals tend to work out more expensive than a contract. If you are already stuck in a contract for another device this may be a good option though.
