Smarty is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) who operates on the Three network and in-fact is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Three. They have been in existence since Mid-2017 and sell themselves on the simplicity of their mobile deals. They offer a range of SIM-only deals but one of their unique selling points is that you can get a monthly SIM deal where they ‘buy-back’ and unused data you have left at the end of the month. They are one of the only mobile operators in the UK to offer discounts as a result of unused data though the practice is more widespread in other countries. 

The Smarty operate under a SIM Only business model. They have two main types of deal both of which offer excellent value for money for customers. They have the straight forward data deals that have unlimited minutes and texts and a bundled amount of data for various prices that offers excellent value for those that are heavy data users. The second type of deal they offer is a ‘data discount’ deals. These are basically fixed price sims that charge you a base price per month and then offer a fixed rate for data on top, with the added bonus that if you don’t use the data you have bought then the cost of the unused data is discounted from your following month’s bill. This can be very attractive for users who use a variable amount of data each month. 

Because Smarty wants to try and keep things simple and straightforward, they don’t offer a lot of extras to their service. There is no access to Netflix or Spotify or BT Sport anything like that. They have a single bolt-on and that is data at a flat fee per Gb. This means that you can get exactly what you need from them and if you need a little bit more, then you can just top up your data. Smarty uses the underlying Three network to provide their services, so this means you get a great network with a lot of coverage across the UK. Smarty currently only covers the 3G and 4G network, but this extends to most of the UK already so the chances are high that you will get a good service wherever you are. Smarty aims to keep things simple and they do. They are part of the standard EU Roaming agreement so this means that if you are travelling to a country that is a member of the EU then you are able to use your phone at no extra cost with the calls, text and data being part of your standard allowance. If you are using your phone outside of these areas then you will need to pre-load your account with some cash credit so that you can use it for calls, text and data in these areas. These operate on a pay-as-you-go basis with the rates for the different services all shown on the Smarty website.
