SIM Only Deals

The term “ SIM card ” stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is a chip card that is inserted into mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets in order to be able to clearly identify the mobile network being used. A processor with a small memory is built into the chip card, on which, among other things, the PIN is stored. This protects the device from unauthorised access.

What functions does a SIM card have?

You need a SIM card to be able to use your mobile phone contract with a phone number. It clearly identifies you on a mobile network and has a 15-digit number that is unique. The card is required for smartphones and tablets if you want to actively use your network allowances.

You need them for phone calls, texting and mobile data usage. The SIM card also serves as a storage medium for phone numbers and contacts.

What types of SIM cards are there and how do they differ?

There are now different types of SIM cards. The main difference is the size of the card. They all have the same function. Which size is required depends on the mobile phone you intend to use the SIM in and is not manufacturer-specific. The following three sizes are currently in circulation on the market:

  • Mini SIM / Standard SIM: 25 x 15 mm
  • Micro SIM: 15 x 12 mm
  • Nano SIM: 12.3 x 8.8 mm

What is a triple SIM?

A triple SIM is a 3-in-1 SIM card the size of a Euro-Cheque card (EC card), which is now sent to customers by various network operators when a mobile phone contract is started.

This saves the customer having to state the required size they need as they can simply break out the required size from a specially prepared card. The contours of the individual cards are pre-cut.

The term “triple SIM” is not used consistently. Among other things, there is also the name "Combi-SIM", which is also used to describe the combination of normal SIM card and micro-SIM.

Which SIM card do I need?

The currently most frequently used card sizes are the Micro-SIM and the Nano-SIM. They can be found on modern smartphones from providers such as Huawei, Apple, Sony and Samsung. Which card format you ultimately need for your device depends entirely on which mobile phone or tablet you have.

Which SIM size is required in each individual case is often written next to the insert compartment on the device itself and in the manufacturer's description. If you receive a triple SIM from your mobile operator, you break out the required size and insert the card. All you have to do is be careful not to damage the chip.

Can I use the same SIM card in a different device?

Many shops offer you the option of punching the mini or micro SIM to the right size for you. This was particularly useful at the time when triple SIM cards were not yet available and the plastic was not prepared accordingly.

If you need a larger card for your new device, you can try to push it back into the base of the triple SIM and fix it in place. However, the method doesn't always work and not everyone manages to not break the base. In this case, it makes sense to purchase an adapter. Or you can order a new SIM card from your provider. But be careful: Depending on the provider, you may pay a fee for your replacement SIM.

Triple SIM card FAQs

Are SIM cards Free?

Most network providers will provide you with an appropriate SIM card when you take out a monthly phone contract with a handset. If you choose a SIM only deal you will be presented with a Triple SIM card from the provider so you can use the one that fits your existing phone.

Do all SIM cards fit all mobile phones?

All mobile devises take different sized SIM cards. You will find that older handsets will take a Standard SIM card, whereas many new smartphones will use a Micro or Nano SIM card as it takes up less room.

Can I use more than one SIM card at a time?

Depending on the model of smartphone you are using, some devices allow the use of a dual SIM which means you could use one handset but have a personal SIM and a business SIM.
