The Huawei Y5p and the big brother Y6p became known through a small leak earlier this month. The Y5p is available in the official Huawei store. Both handsets are a stripped-down smartphone, which is designed for everyday use such as phone calls, messaging and browsing the web.

It’s a perfect entry level phone that will appeal to budget conscious consumers and parents buying their children’s first smartphone. Due to the slimmed down specifications it won’t handle large games but simple gaming will be fine. It comes with an expected price of £89 in the UK but consumers may be put off by the lack of Google services.

Huawei Y5p Specifications

The Huawei Y5p uses a 5.45-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels. There are very thick display edges at the top and bottom, which means that the device no longer looks as sleek as other Huawei devices.

The microUSB type B port is also no longer up to date. After all, the open source version of Android 10 is running under EMUI 10.1, Huawei’s own operating system.

Huawei also promises regular security updates. This is a point Huawei has neglected in many of its other budget devices. Performance and speed is not really the strength of the Y5p using the cheaper and slower MediaTek MT6762R processor. The 5Yp comes with with 2 GB of RAM and a now considered small 32 GB of internal storage. The memory can be expanded by up to 512 GB using a microSD card.

Camera, Sensors, Battery & Colours

On the back, the camera base looks as if several sensors are installed here. However, there is only a single lens, behind it is an 8 MP sensor. The battery is barely worth mentioning at 3,020 mAh, but the low resolution and the economical processor should still provide enough runtime for one day of use.

It doesn’t appear as though Huawei has put a fingerprint sensor on the Y5p, instead there is the easy face recognition. The device is now available in the colors Mint Green, Midnight Black and Phantom Blue.

Big Brother Huawei Y6p

The slightly larger Huawei Y6p is also available in stores. The display is 6.3 inches in size with a 1,600 x 720 resolution. The 8 MP front camera is in a waterdrop notch.

The chipset is identical on the Huawei Y6p and Y5p,. Huawei's big brother was not quite as economical in terms of memory. The Y6p works with 3 GB RAM and 64 GB internal memory, which can be expanded via a microSD card. On the back there is a triple camera consisting of a 13 MP main camera, 5 MP wide-angle lens and a 2 MP depth sensor.

The Huawei Y6p is retailing around £129 in the UK. For a budge smartphone the Y5p and the Y6p are a good choice if you are not worried about the lack of Google services.
